Cathedral of the Sea (2018) Parents Guide: Is the series OK for kids?

The season features frequent sexual content, including nudity (rear and partial front), passionate kissing, and implied sexual encounters. There are disturbing scenes of sexual assault and rape, depicted non-graphically but clearly implied and impactful. Prostitution and concubinage are also depicted as part of the historical setting.

Graphic violence is a significant element. Scenes include brutal floggings where backs are shown bloody, public executions (hanging, burning at the stake), hand-to-hand combat with bladed weapons resulting in visible injuries and blood, war scenes with arrows and swords, and torture. Deaths are frequent and often violent.

Profanity is present but not pervasive. Characters occasionally use a moderate amount of curses and expletives, particularly during moments of anger, frustration, or distress, but it is not a dominant feature of the dialogue.

Alcohol consumption is casual and common throughout the series, reflecting the historical period. Characters are often seen drinking wine or other alcoholic beverages at meals, in taverns, and during celebrations or to cope with stress. While intoxication is rare, the presence of alcohol is consistent.

The series deals with numerous heavy themes, including brutal social injustice, religious persecution by the Inquisition, slavery, famine, revenge, infidelity, sustained trauma, and the abuse of power. Characters face constant threats to their lives and dignity, experiencing profound loss and suffering throughout.
