Sex and nudity in The Knick

Sexual content is moderate to strong. There are explicit scenes depicting prostitutes, including partially clothed women and implied sexual acts, though full nudity is limited. Dr. Thackery has a visible sex worker girlfriend, and there are scenes in brothels with women in states of undress. One notable scene involves a man masturbating while observing a prostitute. Female genital nudity and male genital nudity (historical anatomical photos) are briefly shown.

Violence and gore in The Knick

Violence is severe and pervasive, primarily due to numerous graphic surgical procedures. These scenes depict copious amounts of blood, exposed internal organs, and realistic dissections. Beyond medical violence, there are instances of fistfights, a man having a tooth pulled out forcefully by debt collectors, and a brutal scene where a man cuts the throats of two others and stabs a third, culminating in an axe thrown into a man's forehead. A character is severely beaten. Racial violence erupts on the streets.

Language in The Knick

Frequent strong language is used throughout the season, including multiple uses of 'f***' and 's***', along with period-appropriate derogatory terms. The word 'c***' is used on a few occasions. Profanity is often used to express frustration or in intense situations, particularly within the hospital environment or among lower-class characters.

Mature themes in The Knick

Major themes include drug addiction (cocaine, opium), classism, and racial prejudice prevalent in early 20th-century New York. The series unflinchingly explores the harsh realities of medical practice, the desperation of poverty, and the moral compromises made by its characters. There are depictions of death, grief, and the struggle for medical advancement against high mortality rates. Characters also grapple with mental health issues implied by addiction and trauma.
