Birdsong (2012) Parents Guide: Is the series OK for kids?

The season features explicit sexual content, including scenes of implied oral sex, passionate kissing, and full nudity (upper female nudity, partial male nudity). An affair is central to the plot, depicting sexual encounters both clothed and unclothed, and a scene in a brothel with a naked prostitute.

Severe and graphic depictions of war violence are pervasive. This includes soldiers having body parts blown off (e.g., torso dismemberment with visible organs), graphic gunshot wounds with significant blood and 'bloody mist,' and close-quarters combat. Explosions and the aftermath of injuries with gore are also shown.

Frequent use of strong profanity, including multiple instances of 'f*ck,' 'sh*t,' and other expletives, particularly in the stressful environment of the trenches among soldiers.

Characters are frequently seen drinking alcohol, often in social settings or to cope with the stresses of war. Smoking tobacco is also common among soldiers and civilians. While not central to the plot, these substances are used regularly.

The series deals with profound themes of war trauma, loss, grief, and the psychological impact of combat on soldiers. Adultery and forbidden love are central to the flashback narrative, exploring themes of passion, consequence, and longing amidst a devastating conflict.
