The English (2022) Parents Guide: Is the series OK for kids?

Sexual content is limited to strong innuendo and implied sexual violence without explicit depiction. A character is revealed to be a prostitute, but there is no nudity or graphic sexual acts shown. Some dialogue alludes to past sexual assault or exploitation, but always off-screen.

Graphic and pervasive violence is a central element of the series. This includes brutal gunfights, stabbings, scalpings, dismemberment by horses, and extreme torture. Characters are shown with severe injuries, including exposed organs, severed body parts, and facial mutilation. The violence is often sudden, shocking, and has lasting psychological impact on the characters.

Profanity is frequent and strong, including uses of 'f**k' and its derivatives, 'sh*t,' 'b*tch,' and 'a*****e,' often in moments of stress or anger. The language is consistent with the harsh environment and characters' emotional states.

Characters are frequently seen drinking alcohol, typically in saloon settings, but without clear depictions of intoxication. Occasional pipe smoking is also present, consistent with the historical setting. Drug use is not a central plot point nor explicitly depicted beyond mild social drinking.

The series explores mature themes of revenge, racial prejudice, colonization, and the brutal realities of the American frontier. It delves into the trauma of past events, including genocide against Native Americans, and the psychological scars left by violence and loss. Identity, fate, and the struggle for justice in a lawless land are also prominent.
