UFO (1970) Parents Guide: Is the series OK for kids?

Sexual content is limited to suggestive costuming and implied romantic tension. Female Moonbase personnel wear form-fitting silver catsuits with short skirts and purple wigs, and other female characters are often in tight, revealing jumpsuits or outfits, serving as visual 'eye candy'. There are some mild flirtatious interactions and implied romances, but no explicit sexual scenes or nudity.

Violence is a strong component of the series, stemming from battles between SHADO forces and alien invaders. This includes frequent laser gunfights, explosions of vehicles and UFOs, and hand-to-hand combat. Characters are often injured or killed, sometimes with blood visible but usually without graphic detail. Alien pilots are shown dying or being captured, and humans are also killed in the conflict.

Language is generally mild. Common exclamations like 'damn' or 'hell' appear infrequently. No strong profanity is used.

Alcohol and tobacco use are pervasive throughout the season. Characters are frequently seen drinking alcoholic beverages, often in social settings or to de-stress. Smoking cigarettes and cigars is also very common, with main characters like Commander Straker often seen with a cigarette. One episode features a character using what appears to be a marijuana joint.

The primary themes revolve around an ongoing alien invasion, government secrecy, and the personal sacrifices required to protect Earth. Themes of loss, grief, and the psychological impact of constant threat are present, especially in episodes dealing with Straker's personal life and the fates of those involved in SHADO. Alien motives often involve harvesting human organs for their survival, which is a disturbing underlying premise.
