Misfits is a BAFTA-winning British sci-fi comedy-drama about five young offenders on community service who gain superpowers after a freak electrical storm — powers that mirror their personalities and deepest insecurities. Created by Howard Overman for E4, it ran from 2009 to 2013. Freed entirely from broadcast standards, it is deliberately transgressive: heavy profanity including the c-word appears casually in every episode; sexual… Sign up for the full guide

Sex and nudity in Misfits

Episodes 2 and 6 are the series' most sexually explicit. Episode 2: Alex has sex with multiple women successively to remove their powers — depicted with clear sexual activity (movement, post-encounter scenes); no full frontal nudity. Episode 4: a woman's power activates when she removes her top in a public setting — men in her proximity are overcome; the show identifies this as coercion. Episode 6: Alex removes Finn's Satanic power through anal intercourse without Finn's consent — filmed from outside the toilet…

Violence and gore in Misfits

Episode 4's Nazi-timeline sequences: resistors shot by soldiers, political executions — more politically violent than the show's usual register. Episode 7: Seth's resurrected girlfriend Shannon becomes blood-hungry; zombie cheerleaders attack the community centre; multiple characters are killed in close-quarters combat; a probation supervisor is infected and killed. Episode 8: Simon takes a knife through the abdomen to save Curtis; Rachel (a ghost) slits Alisha's throat on-screen — shown briefly but clearly…

Language in Misfits

Language is the most consistent content concern across the entire run. Every episode is saturated with f-words used as adjective, verb, noun, and emphasis; sh-t; c-nt; b-llocks; w-nker; and tw-t — all used naturally and casually by all five characters. The c-word appears without pause or emphasis in ordinary conversation. This is authentic to the characters' class backgrounds and the show's register, but it is relentless.

Mature themes in Misfits

Series 5's thematic core is consent and structural coercion across three interlocking storylines: Alex's power requires sex (which the show uses to explore necessary violation with inconsistent moral seriousness); Luke's time-loop manipulation makes Jess's consent to their entire relationship structurally impossible from the outset; the Jumper Posse's vigilante violence raises questions about who has the authority to judge which powers are too dangerous to exist. The show's sustained argument — that damaged…
