Age Rating, Sex, Violence & Language

After the closure of their shipyard in Northern Spain, a few former workers: Santa, José, Lino, Amador, Sergei and Reina keep in touch. They meet mainly at a bar owned by their former colleague Rico. Santa is the most superficially confident and unofficial leader of the group. A court case hangs over him relating to a shipyard lamp he smashed during a protest against the closure. José is bitter that his wife, Ana, is employed when he is not.

Sex and nudity in Mondays in the Sun

Mild and largely implied: there is no nudity but a few moments of affectionate touching and a woman briefly seen in jeans and a bra (covered), plus a scene of a man and woman dressing after implied sex. IMDb notes an implied attraction toward a 15-year-old girl presented innocently; nothing explicit is shown. Overall sexual content is brief and non-graphic.

Violence and gore in Mondays in the Sun

Brief but occasionally intense: the opening credits include realistic newsreel footage of the Port of Vigo shipyard riots with police, tear gas and unconscious men. There is also property damage — Santa smashing a streetlamp during a protest and later repeating the act — and tense scenes when the friends break into the ferry. Violence is non-graphic and not prolonged, but the riot footage is visceral.

Language in Mondays in the Sun

Moderate to strong Spanish profanity appears regularly in dialogue and the English subtitles render it bluntly. Expect frequent curses and heated verbal confrontations, especially in bar scenes and during domestic arguments. The tone is rough but not gratuitously explicit beyond the profanities.

Drugs, alcohol, and smoking in Mondays in the Sun

Mild but conspicuous: the group drinks heavily throughout (much of the film is set in a bar) and one character, Amador, is clearly alcoholic. There is a scene where a man drinks while babysitting a toddler and a marijuana-leaf sticker is briefly visible on a teenager's dresser. Drug use is only implied visually; alcohol misuse is recurrent.

Mature themes in Mondays in the Sun

Strong, adult themes run throughout: economic collapse, long-term unemployment, loss of dignity, squalid living conditions, abandonment and intense grief. The film includes a realistic depiction of Amador's decline into alcoholism and the discovery of his suicide, followed by a sombre funeral and the men's attempt to mourn together. These themes are emotionally heavy and central to the film.
