Sex and nudity in Blithe Spirit
This category is moderate. There are multiple scenes of sexual innuendo and suggestive dialogue between Charles and both of his wives. Scenes imply sex is about to happen, but nothing is shown. In one scene, a character who has been drugged strips down to her 1930s-style underwear and dances in a fountain. A painting of a topless woman is briefly visible, and some outfits feature cleavage.
Violence and gore in Blithe Spirit
Violence is very light and mostly comical or implied. The conflict between the two wives, one of whom is a ghost, leads to some slapstick-style actions like objects being moved to trip people. The most significant moment involves a ghost tampering with a car's brakes in a deliberate attempt to cause a fatal accident, which is treated with a surprisingly light tone.
Language in Blithe Spirit
Language is mild and infrequent. Expect some period-appropriate exclamations, such as uses of "damn," "hell," and blasphemous uses of God or Christ's name as exclamations. There is no strong profanity.
Drugs, alcohol, and smoking in Blithe Spirit
This is a moderate concern and a reason for the PG-13 rating. Characters frequently drink cocktails and wine in social settings, typical for the 1930s high-society setting. A key plot point involves a doctor prescribing amphetamines to a character to improve her mood and libido; this 'drug material' leads to a character's erratic behavior.
Mature themes in Blithe Spirit
Mature themes are prominent, though handled with a comedic tone. The entire story revolves around death, ghosts, and the afterlife. It also explores marital conflict, jealousy, deception, and emotional infidelity. One character's death is revealed to be a suicide, and a ghost actively tries to kill a living person to have her husband back in the afterlife.
