Sex and nudity in Kokuho

Brief, non-graphic sexual content appears a few times: IMDb notes two short sex sequences (moaning/thrusting) where only backs and shoulders are visible, plus implied affairs (Kikuo with Fujikoma and later Akiko). Nudity is minimal and not explicit; the scenes are dimly lit and cut away quickly. These scenes are sexual in tone but not prolonged.

Violence and gore in Kokuho

Violence ranges from short fights and public beatings to at least one lethal yakuza attack early in the film; IMDb callers describe "moderate/graphic" moments. Hanai Hanjiro’s on-set collapse with visible vomiting of blood and the emotional fallout are shown plainly, and several scenes of assault or club/hand-to-hand fighting include blood and brutality. The film treats violence seriously and it can be intense and upsetting at times.

Language in Kokuho

Language is generally mild; occasional stronger expletives appear in heated arguments but swearing is not pervasive. Most dialogue is Japanese with subtitles; isolated harsh words surface during confrontations.

Drugs, alcohol, and smoking in Kokuho

Frequent cigarette smoking and routine alcohol use appear across decades: yakuza gatherings, banquets, and backstage scenes show drinking and smoking. Substance use is part of the social and professional world depicted and not glamorized.

Mature themes in Kokuho

Strong, adult themes run through the whole film: grief and revenge after the father’s murder, class stigma for Kikuo’s yakuza origins, an illegitimate daughter (Ayano) and estrangement, gender and identity via onnagata cross‑dressing in kabuki, long-term illness (Shunsuke’s diabetes and amputation), and mortality. The story spans decades and repeatedly returns to loss, reputation, and the cost of artistic ambition.
