Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (2013) Parents Guide: Is the series OK for kids?

Sexual content is mild. Characters, particularly female Gamilan officers and Iscandarian representatives, sometimes wear revealing, form-fitting uniforms or clothing. One episode features a non-graphic bath scene where female characters are nude, but nipples are not depicted. Romantic tension is minimal, primarily between Susumu Kodai and Yuki Mori.

Pervasive and strong. The series features frequent large-scale space battles with ships exploding and numerous casualties. Ground combat involves firearms, with characters shot and blood sometimes depicted, including floating blood in zero-gravity. Characters are sometimes sucked into the vacuum of space, including a flashback scene of a man being pulled out. Planetary bombardment with visually destructive weapons also occurs.

Mild expletives such as "damn" and "hell" are used occasionally by characters, especially during intense battle sequences or moments of frustration. The language remains generally infrequent and does not include stronger profanity.

Alcohol consumption is present, primarily in social or celebratory settings aboard the Yamato and among the Gamilans, often involving sake or wine-like liquids. The ship's doctor occasionally makes references to alcohol and is seen with a bottle of sake but is not depicted as intoxicated or struggling with substance abuse.

Strong themes of war, survival, and sacrifice are central to the series, as humanity faces extinction. Grief and loss are frequently addressed, particularly among the crew mourning fallen comrades and family. Psychological distress is explored in episodes like "The Whisper of the Witch," where characters relive traumatic memories. The moral complexities of warfare and the nature of the enemy are also recurring themes, with the Gamilans initially portrayed as purely evil but later gaining depth.
