Reign is a CW historical drama-fantasy following Mary Queen of Scots as a teenager navigating the French royal court, political intrigue, and romance. It ran four seasons from 2013 to 2017. The show takes extreme liberties with history in favor of romantic drama — it is not a history lesson, but rather a Gossip Girl-style soap opera set in 16th century France. For parents: the show is significantly more adult than its period-drama… Sign up for the full guide

Language Mild 2/10
Sex/Nudity Intense 10/10
Violence/Gore Intense 10/10
Mature Themes Intense 10/10

Sex and nudity in Reign

Moderate to high — the show's most consistent content concern alongside violence. The royal court setting normalizes sexual relationships as political currency. Multiple characters engage in explicit affairs. "The Consummation" (S1E13) — Mary and Francis's wedding night — is the show's most sexually explicit episode. Mary's rape in Season 2 Episode 9 ("Mercy") is depicted directly and its aftermath explored across subsequent episodes. Physical scenes are always tasteful but more explicit than typical CW content.

Violence and gore in Reign

The show's second major content concern — frequent, historical, and occasionally graphic. Executions, torture, poisonings, battlefield violence, and murder are regular occurrences across all four seasons. The plague in Season 2 produces disturbing imagery of mass death. Henry II's madness and his brutal acts toward servants and courtiers are among the most disturbing single-character violence in the series. The show's historical setting normalizes violence as a political tool throughout.

Language in Reign

Mild. The show aired on the CW under broadcast standards throughout. Language stays within TV-14 parameters across all four seasons. Not a content concern — the show's maturity comes from content rather than language.

Mature themes in Reign

Substantial and worth explicit parental engagement. The show is extremely loose with history — parents of teens interested in Mary Queen of Scots should make clear the show is romantic fantasy, not biography. Mary's rape in Season 2 is the show's most serious mature theme and requires parental preview — it is handled with more care than many network depictions but its inclusion in a show marketed to teens warrants discussion. Political power as a theme runs throughout — the show depicts women navigating systems…
