The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run is officially rated PG. Bontent's independent parent guide recommends it for ages 6+.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run follows SpongeBob and Patrick as they embark on a journey to Atlantic City to rescue Gary after he is kidnapped by King Poseidon. The film is rated PG for typical cartoon antics, some rude humor, and mildly suggestive visuals that align with the long-running television series…

The film contains minor, non-explicit humor including brief shots of cartoon characters in their underwear. One scene features Plankton interacting with Patrick's anatomy in a way that is played for immature, slapstick comedy.

Typical of the series, the violence is stylized and slapstick, involving cartoon-style 'bonks,' chases, and exaggerated conflicts. While there is a confrontation with a ghostly villain and guards, no realistic injury or blood is shown.

Language is limited to mild insults and occasional interjections like 'crap,' 'freaking,' and 'damn.' None of the dialogue is pervasive or aggressive.

There is a brief bar sequence where background characters are shown drinking, and SpongeBob and Patrick wake up looking disoriented after a night of partying, implying mild intoxication.

The film explores themes of loss, abandonment, and the importance of friendship. King Poseidon’s vanity and his cruel treatment of snails serve as the primary mature elements, representing selfishness and enslavement.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run runs 95 minutes, directed by Tim Hill, released in 2020.
