Sex and nudity in Malcolm X

A few scenes contain mild sexual content and innuendo. An interracial relationship is central to the first act and includes passionate kissing and implied off-screen sex. A flashback briefly shows the side of a woman's breast as a man dies while on top of her. Some dancing at a ball is sensual, with brief glimpses of women's thighs.

Violence and gore in Malcolm X

Strong and impactful. The film opens with real footage of the Rodney King beating and includes other historical footage of civil rights protestors being hit with fire hoses. Key dramatic scenes depict Ku Klux Klansmen terrorizing Malcolm's family, a man being brutally beaten by police, a tense Russian roulette game, and houses being firebombed. The film's climax is the graphic and intense on-screen assassination of Malcolm X, where he is shot multiple times in front of a crowd.

Language in Malcolm X

Strong and pervasive. The N-word is used dozens of times throughout the film, both as a slur by white characters and in its reclaimed usage by Black characters. The racial slur "cracker" is also used. Other profanity includes multiple uses of "shit," "bullshit," "goddamn," "bitch," and "ass."

Drugs, alcohol, and smoking in Malcolm X

Moderate. In the first third of the film, depicting Malcolm's life as a hustler, there are scenes in bars with drinking and smoking. One scene explicitly shows Malcolm and others snorting cocaine. Later in the film, a character is briefly shown suffering from heroin withdrawal.

Mature themes in Malcolm X

The film is built on strong, mature, and complex historical themes. Systemic racism, white supremacy (personified by the KKK), and police brutality are central and depicted unflinchingly from the start. The narrative explores crime, incarceration, religious conversion, political radicalization, intra-community conflict, and assassination. The emotional weight is significant and sustained over the film's three-hour-plus runtime.
