Sex and nudity in Luther

Brief and non-graphic. There is no nudity: Luther kisses his wife Katharina in bed and she is briefly shown rising when he must leave; Rome is depicted with prostitutes soliciting clerics and sexual activity is discussed off-screen. Overall sexual material is limited to references and a married kiss.

Violence and gore in Luther

Strong and sometimes disturbing but not graphically gory. The film shows the aftermath of the Peasants' Revolt (towns and a church full of corpses), riot confrontations in Wittenberg, a man who is burned alive (camera pulls away), and a hanging child who is taken down; violent clashes, threats of burning, and smoke/fire imagery recur. These scenes are emotionally intense and may upset younger viewers.

Language in Luther

Mild. Mostly period-appropriate swearing and blunt words — repeated uses of 'damn' and 'hell' and one reported use of 'shit' in heated moments. Language is sparse and not sustained.

Drugs, alcohol, and smoking in Luther

Light. Wine appears in liturgical and social contexts (Luther spills a chalice during Mass; wedding guests drink wine), and drinking is shown as part of communal and celebratory scenes. No illicit drug use is depicted.

Mature themes in Luther

Strong, mature themes throughout. The film deals with religious dissent, excommunication, political power struggles (Diet of Worms), the ethics of reform, and the human cost of the Great Peasants' Revolt — including persecution, martyrdom fears, and moral conflict over violence. These are sustained, often somber, and may prompt questions about faith, authority, and violence.
