Butterfly (1999) is rated R largely for a brief but explicit adult sex scene with partial nudity and for its mature, wartime subject matter — the Spanish Civil War and the political persecution that follows. Parents should be aware of a non-graphic but upsetting dog killing, scenes of arrests and public humiliation of Republicans, and a final sequence in which the child protagonist Moncho is pressured to shout hateful insults at his… Sign up for the full guide

Sex and nudity in Butterfly

Strong and brief. IMDb specifically notes a short adult sex scene that shows partial nudity (brief view of breasts and a glimpse of a man's rear) which is interrupted by a dog; that scene is explicit enough to have contributed to the R rating. There is also an earlier, non-sexual scene where girls play in the river in underpants and without shirts (child partial undress) shown briefly. Both are short and non-graphic but parents should expect nudity and sexual content.

Violence and gore in Butterfly

Moderate but emotionally upsetting. The film shows a dog being killed (stabbed with a spear) on-screen — not shown as prolonged suffering, but clearly lethal. There are scenes of Nationalist forces rounding up Republicans and physically forcing them into custody, and the climax includes rocks thrown at prisoners on a truck by townspeople (including Moncho). The physical violence is not graphic but is linked to political intimidation and can be disturbing.

Language in Butterfly

Mild. Dialogue includes some coarse or crude words and shouted insults, especially during the town’s humiliation of prisoners; IMDb and viewers report only light profanity. Most of the strong-sounding language occurs in the final sequence when townspeople and children shout at the Republicans.

Drugs, alcohol, and smoking in Butterfly

Light, background use. Adults are shown smoking and carrying or pouring alcohol in a bar scene; drinking and cigarettes are visible but not glamorized or central to the plot. IMDb notes men handling alcohol in social settings.

Mature themes in Butterfly

Strong and heavy. The core of the film is political — the Spanish Civil War, ideological persecution, and the emotional fallout when a child is forced to betray and publicly shame a beloved teacher, Don Gregorio. Themes include betrayal, ideological pressure, fear of arrest, and a child's loss of innocence; the final emotional reversal (Moncho obeying his mother and assenting to the mob) is intense and likely upsetting.
