Romantic tension develops between Gu Pingyuan and Chang Yuer, and later with Bai Yimei. This is portrayed through longing gazes, shared emotional moments, and expressions of care. There are discussions of marriage alliances, but no sexual content, innuendo, or displays of intimacy beyond platonic affection. A plotline involves women being captured by rebels, implying potential harm, but no sexual assault or exploitation is depicted on-screen.

The season features moderate violence, primarily in the form of sword fights, ambushes, and combat sequences. Characters engage in physical altercations, including assassination attempts with blades and arrows. A village feud is mentioned, and characters navigate a battlefield with implied dangers. Later episodes include clashes with rebels, a wolf attack, and the aftermath of a siege with mass casualties. While blood is sometimes implied or briefly visible, the violence is not overtly graphic and focuses more on…

Dialogue often involves tense negotiations, threats, and verbal sparring appropriate for high-stakes business and political intrigue in a historical setting. There are no instances of strong profanity, but characters express frustration, anger, and disdain through sharp remarks and accusatory language. Insults are generally mild and culturally specific to the period.

Occasional social drinking is depicted, primarily in celebratory contexts or during business negotiations. Characters are seen holding wine cups, but intoxication is rarely shown or emphasized beyond a mild, casual level. The trade of specific goods, including tea, is central to the plot, but no illicit substances are used or referenced.

Prominent themes include political intrigue, corruption, survival, and the manipulation of power within a historical merchant society. Characters face abandonment, betrayal, and the constant threat of death or ruin. The series explores societal prejudice against convicts, the trauma of war, and the complexities of loyalty and alliances. The treatment of captive women and the humanitarian crisis during a siege present serious, though not explicitly graphic, thematic elements concerning human suffering and injustice.
