Future Boy Conan (1978) Parents Guide: Is the series OK for kids?

Sexual content is minimal. There are no explicit scenes or nudity. Mild romantic tension is occasionally present between Conan and Lana. A character's bare backside is mildly visible in a non-sexual context during a comedic scene, but this is brief and innocent.

Violence is frequent but non-graphic, typical of action-adventure animation. It includes numerous fistfights, falls, explosions, and gunfights with laser-like blasts, but without blood or gore. Characters are often in peril, from chases and collapses to battles with soldiers and mechanical beasts. Deaths occur, such as Conan's grandfather, often implied or off-screen, and combatants are typically knocked out rather than seriously injured.

Language is generally mild. Characters occasionally use exclamations like 'damn' or 'hell' in moments of frustration or anger, but strong profanity is consistently absent. The dialogue focuses on plot progression and character interaction rather than crude or offensive language.

Alcohol consumption is present in a few episodes. Jimsy gets drunk on Captain Dice's ship in 'The Barracuda', leading to comic but noticeable intoxication. Adults are occasionally seen drinking socially or in a celebratory context. No drug use is depicted, nor is smoking a prominent feature, beyond a couple of minor characters seen smoking pipes.

The series grapples with significant themes such as the aftermath of apocalyptic war, environmental destruction, and the dangers of unchecked technological power. The oppressive regime of Industria and its leader Lepka embody tyranny and the exploitation of resources, leading to rebellion. Themes of friendship, loyalty, courage, and the importance of family (both biological and chosen) are central to the characters' journeys.
