Carnival Row (2019) Parents Guide: Is the series OK for kids?

The season contains frequent and sometimes explicit sexual content. There are multiple scenes of sexual intercourse with male and female full nudity, including breasts, buttocks, and pubic areas. Brothel scenes are shown with partial nudity and implied sexual acts. Sexual violence is also depicted or implied, including an attempted rape and references to sexual assault.

Violence is pervasive and graphic, including brutal murders with visible gore, dismemberment (off-screen but described, or implied by discovery of body parts), stabbings, shootings, and physical altercations. Monster attacks are depicted with blood and bodily fluids. War flashbacks show intense combat and casualties. Torture and severe injuries are also part of the narrative.

Strong profanity is very frequent and consistent throughout the season. Words such as 'f**k,' 'sh*t,' 'c**t,' 'a**hole,' and derogatory terms like 'critch' (for fae) are used liberally in most episodes, reflecting the harsh environment and characters' frustrations.

The primary themes revolve around racism, xenophobia, and classism, as the fae are treated as second-class citizens. Trauma, grief, and loss are explored through characters' backstories and current struggles. The show deals with murder, injustice, political corruption, and rebellion. Identity, particularly Philo's mixed heritage, is a central theme.
