Sex and nudity in The Magdalene Sisters

Contains strong and disturbing sexual content and nudity. A violent, non-explicit rape occurs early in the film. A priest is shown sexually abusing an intellectually disabled inmate, with one scene implying forced oral sex. In a particularly cruel and humiliating scene, the inmates are forced to stand nude in a line while the nuns mock their bodies; this includes full-frontal and rear female nudity.

Violence and gore in The Magdalene Sisters

Violence is frequent, brutal, and depicted as routine cruelty. Nuns, particularly Sister Bridget, are shown repeatedly beating the young women with leather straps and canes. A rape scene begins with a character being violently struck in the face with a door. During an escape attempt, a girl's hair is violently cut off, resulting in a bloody face. There is also an upsetting scene of an attempted suicide by hanging.

Language in The Magdalene Sisters

Language is strong and includes several uses of 'fuck' and one use of 'cunt.' More pervasively, the nuns frequently use cruel and demeaning terms to verbally abuse the inmates, including 'whore' and 'slut.'

Drugs, alcohol, and smoking in The Magdalene Sisters

Substance use is minimal and not a focus. There are a few fleeting instances of characters smoking cigarettes.

Mature themes in The Magdalene Sisters

The film's themes are profoundly disturbing and mature, centered on the systemic physical, sexual, and psychological abuse of 'fallen' women in religious institutions. It unflinchingly explores religious hypocrisy, the complete loss of human rights, dehumanization, and profound cruelty. Specific thematic events include a young woman having her newborn baby forcibly taken from her and another character's descent into severe mental illness leading to her death.
