The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) Parents Guide: Is the movie OK for kids?
Age Rating, Sex, Violence & Language
Two lifelong friends find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them.
Rated R • 2022 • 1h 54m
A darkly comic fable set on a small Irish island in which a man is suddenly and inexplicably rejected by his lifelong best friend, with consequences that escalate into self-mutilation and tragedy. Deceptively funny on the surface, it is actually a bleak meditation on stubbornness, cruelty, depression, and the randomness of violence. The self-harm content is graphic and memorable.

Sex and nudity in The Banshees of Inisherin
The film contains no nudity and features very little sexual content. There are a few brief, non-graphic verbal references to sexual topics or lonliness in the context of small-town life. As the film is a dark fable focused on a platonic friendship, physical intimacy is not a component of the narrative.
Violence and gore in The Banshees of Inisherin
A character repeatedly cuts off his own fingers as a form of protest, and the severed fingers are shown on screen and used as props in disturbing ways. A character is beaten. Two characters die by violence near the end. The gore is not gratuitous but it is specific and lingers.
Language in The Banshees of Inisherin
Consistent strong Irish profanity throughout, including frequent f-words and crude insults. The language is integral to the characters and setting.
Drugs, alcohol, and smoking in The Banshees of Inisherin
Heavy pub drinking is central to Irish village life as depicted in the film. Characters drink throughout, sometimes to excess. Alcohol is used as social glue, comfort, and avoidance.
Mature themes in The Banshees of Inisherin
Depression and the desire to simply stop existing are central to the film. A character withdraws from life and friendship as an expression of something close to a death wish. The futility of conflict — mirrored by the Irish Civil War heard in the background — and the way small cruelties compound into tragedy are the film's real subjects.
