Sex and nudity in Pride

Brief sexual content is present in a few scenes. At a gay club, men dance in tight, revealing leather outfits. In one scene, women discover a large, unrealistic dildo in a drawer, which is played for comedy. Later, the women look through a gay pornographic magazine where a page showing two naked men, including a visible penis, is briefly seen. A married woman also shares a brief, passionate kiss with a lesbian activist.

Violence and gore in Pride

Violence is infrequent and not graphic. There are scenes of pushing and shoving, and a brick is thrown through a bookshop window in an act of threatening vandalism. It is strongly implied that a main character, Gethin, is brutally beaten in a homophobic attack; he is later seen in a hospital with significant facial injuries. Archival news footage also shows brief, non-graphic clashes between police and striking miners.

Language in Pride

The film's R rating is primarily due to its strong and frequent language. There are over a dozen uses of 'f--k'. The dialogue accurately reflects the prejudice of the era, with derogatory and homophobic slurs including 'f----t,' 'poof,' 'dyke,' and 'queers.' Other profanity includes multiple uses of 's--t,' 'bollocks,' 'bastard,' and 'arse,' plus exclamations like 'Christ Jesus.'

Drugs, alcohol, and smoking in Pride

Characters frequently drink alcohol (mostly beer in pubs and at social gatherings) and smoke cigarettes throughout the film, consistent with the 1980s setting. A few characters are shown to be drunk, often played for comedic effect. Marijuana is mentioned in passing (as 'grass'), but no drug use is depicted on screen.

Mature themes in Pride

The film is built on mature themes. Pervasive homophobia is a central conflict, shown through slurs, social shunning, and the threat of violence. The AIDS crisis is a constant, somber undercurrent, culminating in the reveal that one character has HIV and the knowledge that the protagonist, Mark, will later die from the disease. The film also explores political solidarity, family rejection of an LGBT child, and the emotional toll of strikes and activism.
