Nyad is officially rated PG-13. Bontent's independent parent guide recommends it for ages 12+.

The true story of Diana Nyad's successful 2013 Cuba-to-Florida swim at age 64. An inspiring, mostly family-friendly film. The PG-13 rating reflects a flashback to childhood sexual abuse and some language. Annette Bening and Jodie Foster are both exceptional.

A flashback reveals that Nyad was sexually abused by her coach as a child — depicted briefly but clearly. Not graphic, but may require discussion with younger viewers.

The physical toll of open-water swimming — jellyfish stings depicted graphically, a severe asthma attack, physical deterioration. Not violent in a conventional sense but physically harrowing.

Moderate language, consistent with PG-13.

None of significance.

Childhood sexual abuse and its long aftermath. The relationship between athletic achievement and the desire to reclaim one's body. Female friendship and its sustaining power. Aging and the refusal to accept limitation. An ultimately triumphant film.

Nyad runs 121 minutes, directed by Jimmy Chin & Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, released in 2023.
