Sex and nudity in Beauty Shop

The film is filled with pervasive sexual humor and innuendo. The salon conversations frequently include frank discussions of sex acts, anatomy, bikini waxes, and sex toys. Women wear some revealing outfits with cleavage, and there are scenes of suggestive dancing at a club. A running gag involves a teenage boy filming women's clothed buttocks, and characters make many suggestive remarks, such as one woman commenting on a man's 'big spear'.

Violence and gore in Beauty Shop

Violence is very brief and mostly comical. One scene shows Gina's salon having been vandalized, with the damage seen but not the act itself. A character's abusive ex-boyfriend confronts her at the salon and is pushed away. In a moment of comedic revenge, the antagonist is held down by several men and given a humiliating haircut, which occurs mostly off-screen.

Language in Beauty Shop

Language is frequent and a key reason for the rating. The dialogue includes over 50 mild obscenities, numerous anatomical terms used as insults, and several uses of 'bitch'. According to IMDb, there are also a few uses of racial slurs (including the 'n-word') early in the film. There are also religious exclamations and general name-calling.

Drugs, alcohol, and smoking in Beauty Shop

Substance use is light. Adult characters are seen drinking wine, champagne, and other alcoholic beverages in social settings like a party and a nightclub. In one instance, a character's popular hair conditioner is jokingly referred to as 'hair crack,' which is the film's most direct drug reference.

Mature themes in Beauty Shop

The film's primary themes involve female empowerment, entrepreneurship, and loyalty, as Gina strives to build her own business. It also touches on single motherhood, workplace rivalry, and community. The subplot with Lynn, the salon's only white stylist, explores racial tension and eventual acceptance, while another subplot involves protecting a character from an abusive ex-boyfriend.
