Small Wonder (1985) Parents Guide: Is the series OK for kids?

Age Rating, Sex, Violence & Language

When genius cybernetics engineer Ted Lawson brings home his top-secret invention, a Voice Input Child Identicant or V.I.C.I., life becomes anything but mechanical for the Lawson Family. With his boss and his nosy family living next door, Ted, his wife Joan and their son Jamie must pass Vicki off as a real child. It is easy for Joan, who cannot help doting on her like a daughter, but harder for precocious Jamie, who uses Vicki to do his homework and to ward off Harriet, the annoying redheaded girl next door.

Sex and nudity in Small Wonder

Sexual content is absent. There are no suggestive jokes or innuendo. Romantic storylines are limited to chaste crushes or mild flirtation, such as Reggie trying to work up the nerve to ask a girl out, or Jamie dealing with a possessive girl picking him up. Kissing is not depicted beyond peck-on-the-cheek type affection.

Violence and gore in Small Wonder

Violence is mild and primarily for comedic effect. Slapstick situations occur, such as Vicki's robot twin running amok or a character 'drowning' (unharmed) in a pool. One episode features Jamie, Vicki, and Harriet being held hostage in an inept bank robbery, but the threat is minimal and primarily comedic. Another episode involves Jamie joining a gang that engages in minor vandalism, but it is not graphic or threatening. A character fakes a broken neck for comedic purposes after being 'saved' from choking.

Language in Small Wonder

Language remains very mild, consistent with a TV-G rating. There is no profanity. Minor name-calling or playful insults between Jamie, Reggie, and Harriet are present but are not harsh or frequent. Dialogue is generally wholesome and focuses on comedic misunderstandings.

Drugs, alcohol, and smoking in Small Wonder

Substance use is light this season, with occasional depictions of adults drinking wine at dinner. One episode centers around a schoolyard drug pusher, though the actual drug use is implied or discussed, not shown graphically, as the Lawsons participate in an undercover sting to apprehend him. Another episode involves a misunderstanding where Child Services believes Ted is an alcoholic, leading to discussions about AA, but no actual alcohol abuse is depicted.

Mature themes in Small Wonder

Several episodes feature mature themes handled sensitively. "Vicki and the Pusher" addresses drug dealing and peer pressure. "I Hear You" focuses on empathy and understanding for a deaf child. "Ronald McDonald House" deals with a child suffering from leukemia, portrayed with a focus on support and community. "Girl on the Milk Carton" addresses the theme of a missing child. Other themes include labor strikes, scientific ethics, and the dangers of revealing Vicki's identity.
