Sex and nudity in North and South

Sexual content is moderate. There are passionate kissing scenes and implied sexual encounters, typically shown discretely with couples under bedsheets or with suggestive dialogue. Adultery is a recurring plot point, with some characters engaging in illicit affairs. One character, Madeline Main, is continually depicted as being held in an abusive, effectively captive, sexual relationship by Justin LaMotte, including implied non-consensual acts and a scene where her clothing is torn.

Violence and gore in North and South

Violence is significantly more prominent due to the war setting. Frequent battle scenes depict soldiers being shot, stabbed, and dying, though graphic detail is limited. Hand-to-hand combat, cannon fire, and explosions are shown. Non-military violence includes beatings, a character being whipped, and scenes of implied sexual assault, particularly against Madeline Main. The brutality of slavery is shown through beatings and threats.

Language in North and South

Mild period-appropriate expletives such as "damn" and "hell" are used infrequently. The series includes the use of racial slurs, specifically the 'N-word', in dialogue reflecting the historical context of slavery. This term is used by enslavers and characters expressing racist views towards Black characters.

Drugs, alcohol, and smoking in North and South

Alcohol consumption, primarily social drinking, is depicted throughout the season. Characters are shown consuming wine and spirits at parties and in personal settings. In one instance, a character is forcibly administered laudanum, leading to addiction, which is a significant plot point.

Mature themes in North and South

Central themes include the horrors and trauma of war, the deeply divisive nature of the conflict, and profound grief and loss as characters mourn fallen loved ones. Racism and the institution of slavery are central, with depictions of abuse, dehumanization, and the fight for freedom. Betrayal, both personal and political, is a strong theme. The series also delves into the psychological toll of war and captivity.
