A dream of falling from the sky...and then birth. Rakka is born from a large cocoon into the Old Home, greeted by a group of female beings with small wings on their backs and shining halos above their heads. Soon Rakka’s own wings grow, a halo is placed on her head and she is told that she must work in the nearby town of Grie. She soon realizes that the town and the entire world they live in are confined behind the Wall, a tall, impenetrable wall that none except the mysterious Toga are allowed to exit.

Mild violence is present. Characters occasionally fall or injure themselves, such as Rakka cutting her hand. There are instances of bullying among younger Haibane, like Hyouko's rough treatment of Rakka. The mysterious emergence of wings involves some discomfort as they burst through the skin, though it's not overtly graphic. A bird also dies after being injured, which is depicted briefly but emotionally.

Drugs, alcohol, and smoking in Haibane Renmei
Mild instances of substance use include adult Haibane and humans drinking what appears to be sake or similar alcoholic beverages at social gatherings, often in the background. Mature themes in Haibane Renmei
The series deals heavily with themes of identity, purpose, and guilt. Characters grapple with forgotten pasts and the meaning of their winged existence. Depression and suicidal ideation are strong recurring themes, particularly concerning the 'Sin-bound' state and Reki's struggle with self-worth and despair. Grief and loss are explored through the 'Day of Flight' and Rakka's reaction to Kuu's departure. The series also touches upon isolation, forgiveness, and the search for redemption.
