Sex and nudity in Welcome to the Dollhouse

Strong and unsettling at times. The film contains explicit sexual language and threats: a boy (Brandon) threatens Dawn with rape, later pulls a knife and orders her to strip, and there are several implied/partly undressed situations and a kiss in a junkyard. IMDb's parents guide documents suggestive talk among teens and a centerfold briefly glimpsed in a locker. None of the sexual content is graphically explicit, but the coercive tone and threats are serious.

Violence and gore in Welcome to the Dollhouse

Mostly non-graphic but occasionally intense. There is routine school bullying (punches, pushed to the ground), a spitball incident that hits a teacher's eye, and a tense knife-to-throat confrontation that implies imminent sexual violence. Dawn also smashes a family videotape and briefly raises a hammer over her sleeping sister — a morally fraught, frightening moment but not shown as physical injury. These scenes are emotional and threatening rather than gory.

Language in Welcome to the Dollhouse

Frequent and harsh. The script uses strong profanity repeatedly (IMDb notes roughly 19 uses of 'fuck' and other explicit words) and includes homophobic slurs directed at Dawn's friend Ralphy. Expect adult-level swearing in school, home and party settings; this is a primary reason for the R rating.

Drugs, alcohol, and smoking in Welcome to the Dollhouse

Mild and incidental. There's alcohol at the parents' anniversary party and casual cigarette/alcohol use in background adult scenes, plus references to suspected drug dealing tied to Brandon's arrest. Substance is not glamorized, but drug-dealing is part of the plot context.

Mature themes in Welcome to the Dollhouse

Strong themes of bullying, emotional neglect, humiliation, and child endangerment. The movie treats Dawn's isolation, parental indifference (Marj and Harv favor the younger child) and Missy's kidnapping as central dramatic beats, plus a father's nervous breakdown and Dawn's desperate solo search in New York. These mature themes are handled in a dark, often unsparing way and can be emotionally intense.
