The novel contains several instances of sexual content, primarily reflecting the different cultural perspectives of the characters. This includes descriptions of Polynesian marital customs and later, the sexual frustrations and tensions of the Puritan missionaries who arrive on the islands. Michener explores the stark…

Later chapters deal with the struggles of immigrant groups facing harsh labor conditions and systemic abuse, which are depicted with unflinching realism. The book includes depictions of shark attacks, human…

The language is consistent with mid-20th-century historical literature, featuring sophisticated vocabulary and some period-appropriate vulgarity. While it lacks the pervasive profanity found in contemporary gritty fiction, readers will encounter moderate language used to underscore the intensity of conflict or the harshness of the environment. The tone remains professional and academic rather than colloquial. However, the text does include historical slurs and derogatory terms directed at various ethnic groups…

The central themes are deep and challenging, focusing on the intersection of religion, commerce, and indigenous identity. Michener explores the moral complexities of the Calvinist missionaries, whose zeal for conversion causes long-term psychological and social harm. The book also provides a heavy look at the loss of land, political agency, and cultural traditions, providing a somber critique of historical imperialism.
